yellowjackets
A couple of character designs for a comic idea, about a futuristic team of government-issue monster hunters who are assigned to the sewers and storm drains. It's not exactly the glittering career the young protagonist had in mind, but at least she gets a half-decent company vehicle.
plankton
Several years ago I wrote an article about observing plankton in the ocean for a competition run by The Economist, and this was the little illustration I drew to go with it. I didn't win, but did manage to get shortlisted; perhaps this little guy helped.
beach goblin
Lovely, huh? This was another old character design. This little dude was a goblin who spent all his time at the beach, trying to chat up ladies, mermaids, sand sculptures shaped like mermaids, and the occasional jellyfish.
These were some early development sketches, trying to figure out his silhouette.
I ended up going with the squat, squarish shape with tiny legs (although maybe he's a bit too reminiscent of Yoda...). If I was redesigning him, I think I'd make his medallion enormous, so it interfered with his balance. Basically he'd be a hapless green Napoleon waddling around in a thong.
ghost prince
Starting off with some older art! This was an old character design, but I still like how it turned out. These were the development sketches.
Some expressions. He was meant to be a well-meaning but pretty goofy character (what with getting killed before he could rescue the princess).
